CR- Deconstruction- Music Video

Institution and Audience: Editors- Bullets (2005)-(Martin De Thurrah)
This video belonging to an artist recording for a British, Independent recording label, would be likely to be consumed by fans of the artist and therefore targeted at a more focussed audience. As the record label is independent it is very unlikely that the video would be targeted at music channels. The record label (Kitchenware) for which Editor's are their star signing, so a large amount of the labels money would be spent trying to fortify the band's punk rock image, this would include the actors for the video, and the car for the scene where it is vandalised. This video is the second for this song showing that the label wanted to make the video as perfect as they could, for its particular usage, the fact that they also hired a well known Auter (Martin De Thurrah) shows how committed the label is to sustaining the star image of the band, because this would have required a large budget not as big as those given by larger record labels but a significant proportion of the labels money would have been spent on this video.

Genre and Narrative: Green Day-Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2004-Samuel Bayer)

The song “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” belongs to the punk rock genre as do the artists. This video does not challenge any conventions of music videos belonging to the same genre. Conventions include a performance and narrative integrated video, with the artists taking the lead roles in the narrative. The video is very dark and often fused with an aged reel effect to show that their message has been going on for a long time. Another convention shared by videos of the same genre there is a large amount of close ups of the lead singer using the 1st person mode of address. The narrative is an example of an illustrative video as the band is seen walking down a deserted dirt track as the lyrics are mentioning a ‘lonely road’. The performance part of the band is performed in an abandoned warehouse emphasising on the desolation and loneliness featured in the lyrics of the song. This song follows many conventions of videos belonging to the same genre following Goodwins framework.
